If you want to know how to use a jade roller on your face, then you've come to the right place. We asked the experts what steps to take and how to perform them correctly.
Their popularity has soared and they seem to be everywhere on social media, but are jade rollers just a skin care gimmick or are they really good for your skin? Whether you want to know how to look less tired or how to use a facial massage tool to get rid of dark circles under your eyes, it may help.
Originating in Chinese medicine, jade rollers and scrapers are facial massage tools made from gemstones. Jade is the most commonly used stone, but amethyst and quartz rollers can also be used. These stones or crystals are believed to be energetic and jade is also believed to bring luck and healing. According to Dr. Catherine Denning, a senior aesthetician, "improving skin circulation, facilitating skin healing and preventing signs of aging" are just a few of the benefits of using a jade roller. Read on to learn more about the benefits of the beauty tool - and how to use the Jade Roller effectively, thanks to our step-by-step guide.

How to use a jade roller on your face
Step 1: Prepare your jade roller
Since your jade roller will be in contact with your skin, it's important to keep it clean and bacteria-free, so use antibacterial wipes or wash the stone beforehand. Make sure your skin is clean as well, "Start with a cleanse and then apply your usual routine," advises aesthetician Dr. Katherine Denning (opens in a new tab). You never want to use a jade roller with your makeup on, as it can spread bacteria and cause problems like acne.
According to London acupuncturist Maudie Evitt (opens in a new tab), don't keep it in the fridge; it's best to use a warm roller. "In Chinese medicine, making sure your jade roller is warm/room temperature is the first step in your ritual. Warmth increases qi and blood, which is essential to the intent of this practice."
Step 2: Apply facial oil/moisturizer
To make your jade roller smoother and less resistant to your skin, apply one of the best facial oils (opens in a new tab). Facial oils that don't cause acne won't clog pores, but if your skin is particularly oily, you may prefer to use a moisturizer or lotion.
Acupuncturist Maudie advises, "Warm your favorite facial oil with your hands before applying it to your face to make sure it covers your skin evenly." A facial massage is just one of the many ways to use Bio Oil if that particular product is already on your beauty shelf.
Or, put on your favorite moisturizing mask and cover it with your jade roller. It will feel lovely and help the product penetrate the skin.
step 3: Roll from the center of your face outward
"To help eliminate puffiness, I always start at the midline of my face and work my way out to the sides," says Dr. Katherine. Rolling outward from the center of the face helps the natural lymphatic drainage system and reduces puffiness.
"Start from the forehead moving from side to side or upward, then move to the cheeks," says acupuncturist Maudie. "Coming out of the nose, radiate to the ears. Then to the chin and down to the neck. Keep a consistent rhythm and make sure you're doing the same number of strokes on each side of the face."
"If you have a double-ended jade roller, use the larger roller on the neck, cheeks and forehead. Use the smaller end that you can aim for under the eyes."
Step 4: Don't forget the neck
Facial massage doesn't stop at the face, place the jade roller on the neck to improve chin skin elasticity - perfect for sagging chins and eliminating double chins (opens in a new tab). The trick to an effective neck massage is to use the roller upward, away from the collarbone. "Think of the rolling motion as a pushing mechanism," says acupuncturist Morty. "You want to gently push the skin along the contours of the face and move it slightly upward."
Using a downward direction on the neck will exacerbate any wrinkles or loss of elasticity that naturally occurs at age 30, but going up will counter gravity and make the skin look more lifted.
Step 5: Rinse off
After use Dr. Katherine advises, "Cleaning your jade roller after each use will prevent any acne from occurring." Rinse your jade roller well to prevent bacterial growth and store it in a hygienic place, preferably in a small bag, which will prevent cross-contamination.
Apply facial oil at night if you have dry skin, but if you are prone to acne, you may need to rinse it off with a cleanser. Learn how to cleanse your face (opens in a new tab) properly to help keep your skin looking and feeling healthy.
