Jade rollers are not a recent skin care innovation. They have been a staple of Chinese skin care routines since the 7th century and are thought to have healing and protective properties. Handheld massagers are usually double-ended, with two jade heads spanning the face.
How can jade rollers benefit your skin?
Jade rollers are believed to improve circulation, reduce swelling and can help products penetrate more deeply into the skin. Basically, they are supposed to be a quick and easy treatment for everyday skin care challenges such as dark circles and puffiness. The increased blood circulation also helps smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Jade rollers can be used at room temperature or chilled in the refrigerator.
"The pressure and coldness of the rollers help improve circulation and increase lymphatic drainage," explains Dr. Sperling. "They can also help temporarily improve puffiness or help with the application of topical creams."
In addition to its skin care benefits, jade is said to have a calming effect, so using it may improve your mood. (Yes, really!) "You can also benefit from jade," says Vargas. "It's a traditional stone that soothes the mind and releases negative thoughts."

How does a jade roller work?
After cleansing the skin and applying any skin care products you typically use, Vargas says, "You want to roll your face outward." Light pressure drains lymphatic fluid, while light to medium pressure helps products penetrate deeper and boosts blood flow. "These exercises help increase circulation and collagen production to maintain a youthful glow, just like a daily mini-facial," she explains.
For a firming effect, Park recommends starting with the cheekbones and moving outward. "Then, work against the jawline to create more contour and definition," she says. "After that, move the roller from the back of the ears down to the collarbone to allow excess fluid to flow into the lymphatic system."
When should I use a jade roller?
The beauty of this ritual is that it's a great addition to any morning or nighttime skincare routine. In the morning, a cold jade roller can make sleepy, puffy eyes look refreshed, while in the afternoon, the facial massage tool can be a great way to relieve skin inflammation.
Does the Jade Roller have any side effects?
Jade rollers are safe to use every day and are suitable for all skin types. Dr. Sperling does note, however, that they can spread bacteria and infection if not cleaned properly. Jade rollers are also not helpful in treating inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema or rosacea.
