What Does A Jade Facial Roller Do

Made from gemstones such as jade or rose quartz, the trendy tools are known for helping reduce facial inflammation and puffiness.

But the technique isn't so new. In fact, the roots of using cool stones on the skin go back thousands of years to ancient China.

Dr. Khetarpal shares the best ways to use facial rollers and explains what kind of results you'll see.

What is facial rolling?

Using a tool (usually a roller made of jade or rose quartz on each end), you massage or roll the skin away from the face. You may also see rollers made of other materials such as stainless steel or amethyst.

You can use the facial roller for about 5 minutes a day to immediately enhance your appearance, but the results will not last. Most people will see results only a few hours after treatment.

"It's a temporary improvement in the overall texture and color of the skin," says Dr. Khetarpal.

Benefits of using a facial roller

While using a facial roller may leave your skin feeling good, it may also provide the following benefits.

Improved lymphatic flow and drainage.

Improves blood flow.

Reduces puffiness.

Reduces inflammation.

Cools and soothes the skin.

Provides relaxation.

Reduces stress.

Distributes skin care ingredients more evenly.

"The lymphatic system is your body's way of removing toxins and unwanted bacteria from your body," says Dr. Khetarpal. "So by rolling in a certain direction, you can improve the lymphatic flow and drainage of the face."

How to use the facial roller

When purchasing a facial roller, Dr. Khetarpal says you should make sure you're buying a real, natural stone and not something synthetic.

Once you get it home, here's how to use the facial roller.

Wash your face. Facial rollers are best for fresh, clean skin.

Don't neglect the refrigerator. If you want that cooling effect, keep the roller in the refrigerator to keep the stone cold.

Add skin care products. You can use the facial roller to apply moisturizer, serum or essential oils more evenly to your skin.

Roll down. The direction of rolling is important - roll from the center of your face outward. For example, roll around the eyes away from the eyes to reduce puffiness.

Don't go back and forth. Resist the urge to roll back and forth, as this does not help improve blood flow to the face.

Keep track of time. Dr. Khetarpal says you only need 5 minutes a day or every other day. Using the facial roller for longer periods of time won't give you different results.

Clean the facial roller. Dr. Khetarpal strongly recommends cleaning the facial roller with topical alcohol after each use. "We do have bacteria on our skin," she says. "There's also product residue that can build up."

For those with mature skin, Dr. Khetarpal says to be extra careful with your skin and not to roll hard. "If the skin is more delicate, you could bruise," she says.

If you think a facial roller is right for you, give it a try. Using a facial roller can come in handy for big events when you want to look your best. But as with any new product, proceed with caution at first.
