What is Handmade Soap?
Handmade soap is made in small batches in a pan by melting the oils, adding water and caustic soda, and blending until it thickens before adding essential oils, clays, herbs, and other natural ingredients designed to enhance the soap.
The difference between handmade soap and commercial soap
Commercial soaps are the ones you will easily find at supermarkets and stores. Wrapped in fancy packaging and labeled with glossy words like 'natural', 'organic', 'brightening', all of these soaps are packed with strong foaming agents, artificial fragrances and chemical hardeners.
One way to tell if a commercial soap is 'organic' or 'natural', is to read its ingredient list and labels. Don't spend your money on commercial soaps that contain toxic ingredients like parabens, SLS, SLES, fragrances, triclosan, and Cocamidopropyl betaine,e as they are toxic for the skin and body.
Unlike commercial soaps, handmade soaps aren't made in bulk but in small batches. Handmade soaps also contain a natural skin emollient called glycerin. Glycerin attracts moisture from the air and the deeper layers of your skin to the outer layer of your skin. Glycerin is derived from animal fat and vegetable oil. Too much glycerin can cause the soap to break quickly and become lumpy, while too little can dry your skin out and irritate it.
The Benefits Of Using a Handmade Soap
Gentle on Skin: Handmade soaps are often made with natural oils, butters, and essential oils. These ingredients cleanse without stripping your skin of its natural moisture.
No Harsh Chemicals: Unlike mass-produced soaps, handmade versions typically avoid sulfates, parabens, and artificial additives. This makes them suitable for sensitive skin.
Customizable and Unique: Small-batch soaps often come in a variety of scents, colors, and textures. Some are even tailored to address specific skin concerns like dryness or acne.
Rich in Glycerin: Handmade soap naturally retains glycerin, a moisturizing byproduct that helps keep skin hydrated and soft. Many commercial soaps remove glycerin for use in other products.
Environmentally Friendly: Many soap makers use sustainable ingredients and plastic-free packaging. Plus, the lack of harsh chemicals means fewer pollutants enter the water supply.
Supports Small Businesses: Purchasing handmade soap often means supporting local artisans and small businesses, contributing to your community's economy.
Aromatherapy Benefits: Essential oils in handmade soap can provide calming, refreshing, or energizing effects depending on the scent. It's a small luxury that adds a little relaxation to your day.
How To Make Handmade Soap At Home
Step 1: Supplies
Microwave-safe glass measuring cup
Cutting board
Sharp chef's knife
Small spoons or wooden stir sticks
Soap molds*
Glycerine soap base
Liquid soap coloring
Essential oils
Shea butter soap base
Liquid soap coloring
Essential oils
Step 2: 5 Minutes of Soap Making
Step 1: Figure out how much soap base to melt.
In order to know how much soap base to melt for each soap mold, fill the mold with water (right to the top edge) and dump the water out into a measuring cup. This is the amount of soap you need to melt to fill that mold.
Step 2: Cut the soap base into chunks and add the required amount to a glass measuring cup.
Cut the soap base you're using into small cubes or chunks with a sharp chef's knife. Add the pieces to a microwavable glass measuring cup until they reach the line twice as large as the final amount you need.
Step 3: Melt the soap.
To melt the soap, place it in the microwave, one batch at a time, for 30-second intervals until it is completely liquid and free of chunks.
Step 4: Add the coloring and scents.
Once the soap is completely melted, add color and essential oils if you wish.
Step 5: Mix and pour.
Stir the mix well and pour it slowly into the molds until the mix reaches the top edge of the mold.
Step 6: Demold the soap.
Once the soap has set, carefully remove the soap from the mold, much like you would an ice cube from an ice cube tray.
