If you're not already using jade rollers as part of your skincare routine, you've probably heard their siren call on Instagram. However, if you're considering joining the facial roller community, there are a few things you should know - including that, yes, you should clean your rollers regularly.
First, there is some misinformation about the benefits of the Jade Roller. For example, it won't help your skin care products penetrate your skin or heal your acne and dullness, but it will provide a very good facial massage and may improve facial circulation.
It also doesn't necessarily matter if your roller is made of jade. Any roller is technically capable of providing you with a facial massage. However, a real jade roller may last longer - because jade is a naturally cool stone, it will feel cool and pleasant on your face even if you don't keep it in the refrigerator. (You should keep track.) There is also centuries of precedent for using jade: the tool dates back to at least the seventh century.

How to clean a jade roller
Once you've spent a few days practicing your roller, it's time to clean your roller. (If your skin is prone to acne or sensitivity, or if you always use your roller immediately after applying a serum or facial oil, you may need to clean it daily.) It's very simple: wipe the roller with a microfiber cloth dipped in warm water and soap. This method works not only on jade rollers, but also on rollers made of other stones such as rose quartz and amethyst.
Warning: Do not immerse the roller in water for a long time. You wouldn't do this to your beloved makeup brushes, so don't do it to your makeup brushes either.
As far as soap is concerned, the best option is to use the same cleanser as you use for washing your face - that way there is no risk of irritation. If your cleanser is too expensive to use (and we have) a cleansing tool, use the mildest soap you have on hand. What not to use: Alcohol, acetone or any other harsh chemicals. You run the risk of damaging the stone
Lay the roller flat on a clean towel to dry. After it is completely dry - and only then - you can wrap it up for safe keeping or put it on a shelf.
Cold or not cold?
Brands (opens in a new tab), beauty bloggers and Sephora reviewers (opens in a new tab) alike recommend storing it in the fridge overnight to maximize the "cold scoop" effect. Be sure to keep it in a Ziploc bag or it may give off a garlic scent. Yes, this is a real problem that people have encountered.
If you really want a cold roller in a pinch, you can also put yours in the fridge. Handle it carefully afterwards so that the stone doesn't break. In most cases, it's best to keep it in the fridge (or skin care fridge).
Don't want to put your roller in the fridge with a bunch of yogurt? Well, that's fair enough. Some options come in a small bag, but even if yours doesn't, you'll want to store it separately from the rest of your makeup. It's touching your face! You won't store your lipstick with the lid on!
Likewise, a jade roller won't solve all your skincare concerns overnight. There are other tools - including rollers under $40, which will do the same job nicely. But if you're going to invest in the real thing, you're better off keeping it in pristine condition.
