How Does A Jade Roller Help Skin

Google isn't going anywhere, but if you want to know where to get the best latte, mezcal cocktail or old-fashioned Levi's in any city, a quick glance at Instagram will give you the answer. The same goes for discovering new beauty trends. So far, you've probably seen jade tumblers everywhere. But what exactly does a jade roller do, and do these facial massage tools really work?

With the help of Los Angeles-based estheticians Sonia Vargas and Jackie Park and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Shari Sperling, we take a comprehensive look at what jade rollers do, how they work, and the proper way to use one.

What is a jade roller?

Jade rollers are not a recent innovation in skin care. They have been a staple of Chinese skincare routines since the 7th century and are thought to have healing and protective properties. Handheld massagers are usually double-ended, with two jade heads across the face.

How can jade rollers benefit your skin?

Jade rollers are believed to improve circulation, reduce swelling and can help products penetrate more deeply into the skin. Basically, they are supposed to be a quick and easy treatment for everyday skin care challenges such as dark circles and puffiness. The increased blood circulation also helps smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Jade rollers can be used at room temperature or chilled in the refrigerator.

"The pressure and coldness of the rollers help improve circulation and increase lymphatic drainage," explains Dr. Sperling. "They can also help temporarily improve puffiness or help with the application of topical creams."

In addition to its skin care benefits, jade is said to have a calming effect, so using it may improve your mood. (Yes, really!) "You can also benefit from jade," says Vargas. "It's a traditional stone that soothes the mind and releases negative thoughts."

How does a jade roller work?

After cleansing the skin and applying any skin care products you typically use, Vargas says, "You want to roll your face outward." Light pressure drains lymphatic fluid, while light to medium pressure helps products penetrate deeper and boosts blood flow. "These exercises help increase circulation and collagen production to maintain a youthful glow, just like a daily mini-facial," she explains.

For a firming effect, Park recommends starting with the cheekbones and moving outward. "Then, work against the jawline to create more contour and definition," she says. "After that, move the roller from the back of the ears down to the collarbone to allow excess fluid to flow into the lymphatic system."

Wait, what skin care products work for Jade Rollers?

A serum or facial oil and a Jade Roller is a winning combination. These products will help the facial massager glide over your face, and the tool helps its active ingredients penetrate deep into your skin.

As for what ingredients to use, there are choices. "I like to use firming peptides and work around areas that have fine lines and wrinkles," Vargas says. "Plant-based stem cells are also beneficial when using roll-ons. Also, a moisturizing serum is key because we all need hydration. You can also use a whitening oil."

When should I use a jade roller?

The beauty of this ritual is that it is a great addition to any morning or nighttime skincare routine. In the morning, a cold jade roller can make sleepy, puffy eyes look refreshed, while in the afternoon, a facial massage tool can be a great way to relieve skin inflammation.

Does the Jade Roller have any side effects?

Jade rollers are safe to use every day and are suitable for all skin types. Dr. Sperling does note, however, that they can spread bacteria and infection if not cleaned properly. Jade rollers are also not helpful in treating inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema or rosacea.

Is there a difference between cheap and expensive jade rollers?

It depends entirely on personal preference, but one would not make a cheap choice with a quality stone. "I personally would invest in a quality jade roller because you are paying for a quality stone," Park says. "Plus, you're investing in a beautiful piece that you can use every day as a ritual!"
