Jade rollers have recently become popular on Instagram. The stunning green stones create beautiful photos, and celebrities and influencers are quick to rave about their benefits. But is this trend really effective? The complicated answer is yes and no.
What are jade rollers?
Jade rollers are an emerging trend that many believe has a variety of facial benefits. "From improving circulation and reducing puffiness to adding a sense of relaxation to your skincare routine, many beauty gurus are talking about the benefits of this new beauty tool," says Dr. Jennifer Vickers of Sanova Dermatology in Austin, Texas. These rollers, also available in a pale pink rose quartz version, typically consist of rollers of different sizes that are best suited for different areas of the face and are attached by a handle.

The benefits of jade rollers
Jade rollers can benefit your skin in a variety of ways. "Jade is cool to the touch and helps reduce redness, puffiness and stress," Dr. Vickers mentioned. "Over time, the roller's slow, firm massage can also increase circulation and tighten the skin," she continues. Beauty experts often recommend rolling upward and outward for best results and to help reduce wrinkles later in life.
The jade roller myth
For centuries, jade, rose quartz and various other gemstones and crystals have been credited with a variety of healing properties, such as stress relief and concentration enhancement. However, these claims have been largely debunked by several scientific studies. "At best, certain stones may have a placebo effect, but don't expect your jade roller to cleanse your body," notes Dr. Vickers.
