How Does a Reed Diffuser Work?
A reed diffuser is simply a vessel that contains fragrance oil and reeds. The vessel itself can be made from a variety of materials but something nonporous like glass is generally best. The size of the vessel determines how much fragrance oil it can hold and thus how long the scent will last.
The reed diffuser sticks used in a reed diffuser contain capillaries that act like tiny straws, drawing the fragrance oil up the length of the reed. When it reaches the tip, the oil lightly evaporates, dispersing the fragrance into the air.

Do Reed Diffusers Expire?
Generally, most fragrance oils are expected to last around one year, but different oils use different ingredients and components, so they tend to oxidize at different rates. It is challenging to give you a yes or no, when and why.
At The Essence Vault, our diffuser oils are crafted using vegan, cruelty-free, and natural ingredients. They are designed to be long-lasting as our diffuser oils have a shelf life of 2 years and benefit from not needing an expiry date!
Preserving Your Reed Diffuser
Looking after your fragrance products is the bare minimum and can make a massive difference in the lifespan of your diffuser. Here are three tips for keeping your diffuser fresh and fragrant for longer:
Safe sealing
Say you're heading off on holiday or out of the house for a while; sealing your diffuser using its original lid or suitable stopper can prevent the fragrance oil from escaping and being wasted.
Flip those reeds
Flipping your reeds now and then to disperse fragrances is essential. Flipping them also preserves the reeds, keeping them moist and preventing them from attracting dust and dirt over time.
Keepin' Cool
Store your diffusers in cool, dry places to preserve the diffuser oils and maintain a long-lasting fragrance.
can you use expired reed diffusers?
Reed diffusers themselves are generally durable and do not have a physical expiration date. However, the fragrance oil within them can degrade over time, leading to a diminished or altered scent. Factors such as exposure to light, temperature, and humidity can influence the rate of degradation. While the diffuser itself may still function, the quality of the fragrance experience can deteriorate.
When considering using expired reed diffusers, it's important to be aware of the following:
Scent Intensity: The fragrance may be significantly weaker than when new, particularly if the oil has been exposed to excessive light or heat.
Scent Profile: The fragrance may have evolved or changed due to the aging process. Some notes may have faded, while others may have become more pronounced.
Safety: If the oil has become rancid or moldy, it's advisable to discard it to avoid potential health risks. Rancid oil can emit unpleasant odors and may cause allergic reactions or respiratory problems.
If you're unsure about the quality of an expired reed diffuser, it's recommended to test it in a small, well-ventilated area before using it in a larger space. For optimal fragrance experience and safety, it's generally best to use reed diffusers within their recommended shelf life. This typically ranges from 12 to 18 months but can vary depending on the specific product and storage conditions.
