Gua sha has been part of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years, combining tools such as horns, stones and jade to scrape the skin, and there is also solid clinical scientific evidence that other popular tools such as facial rollers are out of reach.
One reason Gua Sha enthusiasts love the practice so much is because regular scraping of the skin improves stagnant blood flow and can increase surface microcirculation by 400%, which purifies the skin, defines and contours the jaw, and enhances facial symmetry.

The dramatic before-and-after images scattered across Instagram and TikTok are also impressive. Some people refer to scraping as natural bOTOX because it reduces fine lines and wrinkles without needles or injections.
But can a precise swipe of a stone on the skin do the same thing as injections and fillers? Out of curiosity and wonder, we sought the help of three experts. Here's everything you need to know about potentially swapping your beloved cosmetic injections for a scraping tool and when it's best to pair it with an in-office procedure.
How Gua Sha works
A Gua Sha facial massage is a quick and easy step that can be incorporated into any skin care routine that involves "scraping" the skin with a palm-sized tool. Gently scraping the skin with upward pressure awakens the lymphatic system (which runs throughout the body) and increases circulation to carry away toxins and excess fluids, thereby reducing puffiness. Manual pressure using a gua sha tool can also release underlying muscle tension, similar to the relief we get from a neck or shoulder massage. This is especially helpful for people who suffer from TMJ and jaw tightness or tightness.
"A great opportunity to check in with yourself and take some time in the morning or evening for self-care." It also offers some excellent cosmetic and anti-aging benefits. "Gua sha is very popular right now because of its dramatic effects on lifting and shaping the face by improving circulation, reducing inflammation, puffiness and fine lines, and creating a healthy glow. I have had patients use Gua Sha to transform their faces," and with time and consistent use, it can also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
However, despite the growing momentum of gua sha, it is critical to do it correctly while maintaining harmony with the skin. I see many women using this endo method incorrectly because they have watched influencers or videos, but have not learned correctly from a Chinese doctor. It's important to always use gua sha with a serum, oil or cream, which allows the instrument to glide effortlessly over the skin. Finally, she advises against using broken or chipped scrapers, as they can cut the skin.
Is Gua Sha as effective as BOTOX?
A before-and-after photo might be worth a thousand words. Nonetheless, whatever the image about Gua Sha conveys, it works differently than BOTOX. Although both Gua Sha and BOTOX can improve fine lines, wrinkles and facial aging, Dr. Parker says Gua Sha and BOTOX should never be considered the same thing. They have unique mechanisms of action. For example, gua sha stimulates blood flow to the skin and helps reduce puffiness and edema, but will not magically eliminate wrinkles and expression lines. Gua sha can rejuvenate stagnant tissues without any needles, injections or chemical reactions.
While Gua Sha relies on pressure, massage and anti-inflammatory scraping to work the muscles and tissues to get stagnant blood flowing again to rejuvenate the skin, Botox (among others) uses neurotoxins that when injected will block the nerve signals needed to contract the muscles. Reducing or eliminating these contractions and facial expressions can soften the deep-rooted fine lines and wrinkles in the skin.
Another differentiating factor between the two is their onset of action: neuromodulators begin to work after a few days to a week; in the long run, scraping can improve the appearance of the skin. However, you may need to use Gua Sha consistently for several months to see results, as it takes time to unblock stagnant blood and lymphatic fluid flow. "Getting the lymphatic system and blood flowing helps make the skin healthier and younger, and using it regularly can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
