Soap can be acidic, alkaline, or neutral. Generally, soap used for laundry purposes is alkaline. The main component of soap is sodium fatty acid, a strong base weak acid salt. It utilizes a greater amount of hydroxide ions in an alkaline solution to remove oil stains, as the hydrogen ions in an acidic solution cannot effectively react with oil stains. The alkalinity can be proven using pH paper, purple litmus solution, or colorless phenolphthalein solution. Soap is a common daily commodity that acts as a stain remover and antibacterial agent.
Soap is a general term for fatty acid metal salts. The carbon count of fatty acids in everyday soap typically ranges from 10 to 18, with the main metals being sodium or potassium alkali metals. Special-purpose soaps are also made using ammonia and certain organic bases like ethanolamine or triethanolamine. Soap encompasses laundry soap, perfumed soap, metallic soap, liquid soap, and related products such as fatty acids, hardened oils, glycerin, and more.

In ancient times in the Yellow River Basin, people used soap nuts for washing clothes, but in the Yangtze River Basin, soap nut trees were not found. Later, another type of tree was discovered whose fruits had properties similar to soap nuts but were thicker. Thus, it was named "soap fruit." Even in modern times, when detergent was invented, people continued to use the name "soap" for these products.
Soap has various uses. Apart from daily hand cleaning and laundry purposes, it is extensively used in the textile industry. Sodium salts of higher fatty acids are commonly used, referred to as hard soap. Potassium salts are known as soft soap, often used for shampoo and shaving purposes. Its ammonium salt is frequently used for making snowflake cream. Soap water can be used to clean bee stings or insect bites, providing antiseptic effects. If shoes are too tight and to prevent heel damage, soap can be applied to the heels.
