What is a jade roller?

A jade roller is a stone that looks like a small paint roller and is used to massage the skin," says New York City dermatologist Michele Farber. It helps with lymphatic drainage, blood circulation, and is used with products to aid absorption."

The practice of jade rolling has its roots in ancient Chinese beauty rituals, and some people believe that jade has mysterious healing properties. In addition to jade, the tool is also available in a rose quartz version, which essentially offers the same experience but with a different pop of color for your #shelfies. Lilly isn't the only celebrity who seems to be obsessed with jade rollers. Kim Kardashian, Victoria Beckham and Alicia Keys are all reportedly fans who supplement their beauty routines with regular jade roller facial massages.

What's the deal with using a jade roller?

"It's very effective at eliminating puffiness under the eyes," says Dr. Faber, who notes that as part of an evening routine, it can help your skincare products absorb better. "Be aware that it's not a panacea for acne or other skin conditions, but it can certainly make your skin feel good by improving drainage and getting you into a routine." Caudalie co-founder Mathilde Thomas says the jade roller "is great for improving circulation, removing toxins and energizing the skin. At home, I recommend using the jade roller to apply serums to the entire face and neck to help the products penetrate as deeply as possible while increasing blood and lymphatic circulation."

If you'd like to try jade rolling yourself, Dr. Farber notes the importance of making sure to use the roller on clean skin to avoid dirt and bacteria buildup - which can lead to acne. "It's best to roll it off centered on your nose," says Dr. Farber, who adds, "Placing it in the refrigerator for a cooling effect can help eliminate puffiness."
