Factors that influence a soap's susceptibility to heat include:
Soap Type: Handmade and melt-and-pour soaps are more prone to melting than commercial bar soaps.
Temperature: Higher temperatures increase the likelihood of softening or melting.
Duration: Prolonged exposure to heat is more likely to cause melting than brief exposure.
To prevent soap from softening or melting, it is recommended to store it in a cool, dry environment.
How to make your bar soap last longer
Does your soap bar disappear faster than you expected? While bar soap is an inexpensive and eco-friendly alternative to body wash, improper storage can cause your soap bar to melt down the drain. Below are three tips for making your bar soap last longer.
1. Keep it out of water.
If your bar soap is on a ledge in your shower, it is likely sitting in water which causes the bar to break down quicker. To prevent this, set the bar on the ledge farthest from the showerhead, and use a soap dish or mat. Look for one that allows airflow so that the bar dries out between uses.
2. Use a washcloth or loofah.
Lathering up with your hands uses more soap than a few swipes across a loofah or washcloth. However, by absorbing and retaining the lather, a washcloth or loofah uses a small amount of soap more effectively than your hands!
3. Let it air dry completely.
If bar soap is constantly used throughout the day, it will always be melting. Let it air dry completely before using it again to make it last longer!
A soap net is a great way to keep air flowing to your soap. It also helps exfoliate and remove dead skin cells!
Even by applying these tips to extend the life of your bar soap, you will at some point be left with small scraps that are nearly impossible to use. But don't throw those away! Instead, put all the scraps into a soap net and use that as a loofah. You can also turn them into liquid soap by breaking them up, adding water, and melting it over low heat on the stove.
